Week 2

June 1st - June 7th: Settling In

Week 1 < ----------------- > Week 3

I finished up the tasks that Forrest gave me and he gave me other things to do. Forrest had already had an outline for a GUI file, and he wanted me to add on to it a program that will load the spectrogram of a wav file and have the user be able to put boxes around the bird syllables in the spectrogram. He gave me a detailed list of the requirements that he wanted and I went to work. The tools that I started to become familiar with are OpenGL and glut. I got snagged on a couple things, but a quick email to Forrest and I got back on track. Even though this is only my second week, I definitely have enjoyed my experience so far. The flexibility and independence of working on my own program stimulates my mind on a completely different level than anything else I have worked on. I am creating something from scratch, and that means a lot to me, even if I am not sure if it works right.

WEEKEND: My roommates are preparing for their finals this week, so I spent a lot of time putting this web site together while watching movies in the living room. It reminds me of being home, just chilling out, multitasking as usual. Never before have I worked with HTML or had to create a website, but this is definitely an experience that I have wanted to do for a while. I ended up downloading Evrsoft First Page, which is just a free HTML editor that lets you preview what you are working on when you are working on it. It has been going pretty well. I really want to get an HTML book, just to have something to reference as I work. Online they have a ton of self help sites, but to me, I learn better with something in my hands that I can flip through, rather than on a screen.
