Privacy R&D Workshop

Synopsis

Earlier this year, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) published a paper calling for the development of an R&D roadmap for privacy. This paper adds to the flood of national studies and reports, authored by the National Academies, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Commerce, and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and one of the fourteen National Academy of Engineering's 2008 Grand Challenges on Secure Cyberspace, all of which call for the science and engineering community and policy experts to work together on privacy, especially in light of new and disruptive information and communications technology.

The workshop will be structured in two parts. In the first part, we will have five “domain” panels with experts from government, industry, and academia. The purpose of these panels is to elucidate the sector-specific privacy challenges and in that context, the technical capabilities and opportunities for the research community. The second part of the workshop will focus on developing a consensus statement on the need for a concerted effort to address privacy R&D and developing a strategy for communicating this consensus statement to relevant stakeholders. The workshop will conclude with a reception at a nearby location.
