Interactive Technology Workshops
Interactive computing technology is based primarily on the architectures created for the XEROX Star and the Macintosh. Computing has changed since then and the expectations of people have changed radically yet, with the exception of the Web little has changed in the underlying theory and systems that support interactivity. A revolution in the foundation of interaction is required. It is the foundation tools that empowers explosive growth in new uses for computing. This is a proposal for a series of three workshops to map out a new agenda for interactive technology.
The field of human-computer interaction is large and covers large segments of the human experience. The proposed workshops target critical segments of the future of human-computer experiences. We focus on interactive technology innovation as an enabling foundation while creating three workshops that focus on key emergent trends. These workshops are focused on the technology foundations that underlie and unify how people interact with computers. We have set aside issues of psychology, usability and anthropology not because they are unimportant but rather to focus these three workshops in areas where we believe technological progress can be achieved.
Interactive System Architecture - the input devices, sensors, techniques and organizing architectures that form the technical substrate for all other work. This workshop will create an agenda for the foundations of new and powerful interactions that go way beyond windows and mice.
Persuasive experiences (digital storytelling) - A culture is defined by its shared stories and the messages that people communicate with each other. Computing has created new ways for stories to be told in entertainment and education. This workshop will outline how we can bring digital storytelling from the realm multimillion dollar productions down to the practical needs of everyday social, educational and political discourse.
Ultra-large scale interaction a byproduct of the Internet's success is that large numbers of people can interact with each other and with large stores of loosely interconnected data. This workshop will create an agenda for interactions that involve thousands of participants.
