Dr. Susan Rodger
Professor of the Practice - Duke University
DREU 2009 Mentor
Dr. Susan Rodger is a Professor of the Practice in the Computer Science Department at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science at Purdue University in 1989 and has been teaching computer science at the post secondary levels since then.
Professor Rodger is interested in researching: tools where students can interact and visualize computer science concepts, computer science education, algorithm animation, analysis of algorithms, parallel algorithms, data structures, and computational geometry. JFLAP, as described on the JFLAP webpage is a package of graphical tools which can be used as an aid in learning the basic concepts of formal computer languages and automata theory. Professor Rodger has been involved in promoting Alice as a way to teach middle school and high school students programming concepts. She has taught courses at Duke University, provided various seminars for visiting teachers and students, and provided teaching resources for Alice.
It is a privilege for me to be working for Professor Rodger and I know I will learn a lot about how computer science can be taught. As a DREU mentor she has been outstanding! Professor Rodger really helped out to make sure that all the paper work was done for me to get to Duke. She has been very welcoming and has made sure that I have settled in.
