Physical User Interface Design for Visualizations

The project consists of conducting an empirical research study that tests user interaction techniques to physically interact with visualizations of high dimensional data (i.e. representing complex data using novel computer graphic an interaction techniques).

The goal of this experiment was to compare the usability of a mouse, a touchscreen pen, and physical sliders for manipulating parameters.

Using these three interface devices, users were asked to move the four sliders on the screen up and down in order to change the colour of the top and bottom quarters so that they match the colour of the left and right quarters. These four sliders represent an lab colour space. The first slider controls the luminance, the second slider controls the magenta/red to green spectrum, the third slider controls the yellow to blue spectrum, and the fourth slider controls the transparency.
