Computer networks are crucial part of the information infrastructure. However, networks are extremely vulnerable to many types of attacks, such as computer worms and viruses. In this project, we will attempt to detect network traffic patterns that are indicative of a flash worm attack in progress. We will begin by working with different tools, such as Wireshark and NS2, where the former will be used for obtaining real time network traffic data and the latter will be used to generate simulated network data. We will be devising an algorithm to achieve more accurate worm detection. To accomplish this goal, we will search for tree-like structures in network traffic, which are typical of a flash worm attack on a network.
