In this project, we build a piece of software, Math Scratchpad, using the functional language ML, that provides a disabled student independence by replacing the role of a scribe in solving mathematical problems. Persons who cannot write because of a physical disability are seriously handicapped when it comes to solving mathematical problems. They must remember and formulate complete solutions in their head. Math Scratchpad provides the correct format for solving a problem, but does not solve the problem for the user. Also, problems are user generated as opposed to a math tutorial that generates its own problems to be solved by the user. The intent of Scratchpad is not to check the user's work. The balance between managing such mundane details while insuring the user is completing the necessary work is the most important part of this program and needs careful consideration.

Most assistive technology provides specialized interfaces to commonly used
computer services. This system will provide a novel service to the
handicapped which emulates what those without motor difficulties do with
paper and pencil.
