The CRA Committee on the Status of Women in CS and CE was formed to eliminate the barriers to full participation by women in CS and CE research. Our goal is to maintain and increase the number, status, and success of women participating in CS and CE research at the Ph.D. level. We do this through a series of projects run by members of the CS and CE research community.
The Conference Experiences for Women project is funded by the Education, Outreach, and Training group of the Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastruction (EOT-PACI) of the NSF. We believe the experience of attending a research conference is very motivating for female undergrads and new graduate students; interaction with faculty (particularly female faculty who can act as role models) is also important in the decision of women to pursue a research career. |
To this end, we support travel and conference expenses, up to $1000, for female students who are accompanied by a faculty member (male or female, but female "conference mentors" are given priority). Highest priority goes to undergrads and followed by beginning graduate students. Support will not be provided for students who are giving papers--we do not want to support travel for students who would have attended the conference anyway or to help advisors avoid using their own travel funds (we have very limited funds and there are programs to provide money for these other goals).
So far, we have selected 9 undergraduate and 7 first year graduate students to participate in the Conference Experiences for Women Program . The following lists the program's mentors, 8 women and 5 men (most of the faculty taking first year grads are new faculty who can use the help themselves in terms of recruiting students and being unable to take the students on their grants).
- Ben Bederson (1 new grad, new prof.), CHI, April 18-23, Los Angeles
- Anita Jones (2 undergrads), conference unknown
